Hopfgarten in Defereggen

Enjoyment and relaxation

Only a few valleys are as rich in water treasures as Defereggen Valley in Osttirol, which has preserved much of its originality. All around these riches of water, the Defereggen offers more options for enjoyment, experiences and recreation than most other valleys in the Alps. Having turned off from Iseltal Valley you'll reach the first of the three municipalities of Defereggen Valley after a short climb through the Schwarzach Gorge with the national park community of Hopfgarten.

Between the rushing Schwarzach River and the sloping hillsides, the houses are closely strung together. Above, the farmsteads picturesquely nestled among the mountainous scenery stand out, in the summer months they are adorned with colourful flower boxes thus contributing to the unmistakable appearance of the locality.

You can be sure that the hotel or inn where you are staying and also the balcony of your apartment or room on a farmhouse is rich in fragrant flowers.

Next to the stately village church, unique chapels are scattered all across the municipal area, which were erected by the inhabitants of the neighbouring farms and are also still preserved and maintained by them until this day.

Hopfgarten in summer

As only 6% of the municipal area of Hopfgarten in Hohe Tauern National Park can be settled on, you'll find untouched and pristine nature here like hardly anywhere else. When out and about in the impressive mountain ranges, you may catch sight of eagles, chamois and marmots on the way to the summits of Riegel or Stanzling. On the summit plateau of Regenstein – with 2,891 metres the highest mountain of Hopfgarten – you can enjoy the unforgettable view of the border mountain to Villgratental to the fullest. In addition to the Glockner Group across the Venediger Group, you can also marvel at the South Tirolean and Lienz Dolomites as well as the Carnic Ridge from Regenstein Mountain. The gentle ridge of nearby Firstkogel is also home to the geographic centre of Osttirol. The expansive natural landscapes around Hopfgarten offer numerous hiking options, with the Apollo trail enticing you to enter the realm of Apollo – a beautiful butterfly – where the "Tröglis-Schupfen" give weary hikers the chance to rest on nice-smelling hay stores. The Edelweiss trail runs significantly higher, fully living up to its name. Austria's national flower edelweiss, highly symbolic to the region, flowers high above Hopfgarten. It is under constant watch of the King of the Skies and trademark of Defereggen Valley – the Eagle. A cross-border multi-day hike into neighbouring Antholzer Valley to Italy also makes for an unforgettable experience.
As wonderful as mountain hiking may be, there are also plenty of options for shorter and more leisurely walks in Hopfgarten. The water trail along Schwarzach River on the one hand offers unique encounters with nature, but also imparts knowledge about the use and dangers of water thanks to presentation boards. This tour also leads you past the beautifully designed pond arrangement "Auen Tümpfl", a biotope teeming with fish and a children's playground. The many natural gems of Hopfgarten can also be reached on the hiking trails. Thus an exciting hike to Glaurit Waterfall, for example, is worthwhile as is a quiet afternoon on the banks of idyllic Geigensee Lake. But the nature around Hopfgarten can also be explored on the mountain bike routes of Zwenewaldweg and Dölacher Almtal.

Hopfgarten in winter

Not only in summer, but in the winter months as well, Hopfgarten attracts numerous visitors, always impressing with its peaceful location and unique winter scenery. The Mühlegg ski lift offers beginners and children in particular an ideal practice area. The family skiing area Brunnalm in St. Jakob and the Grosglockner-Resort Kals-Matrei are also just a few minutes drive away. Cross-country skiing fans will find a 10 km long, optimally groomed ski trail along the Schwarzach, offering unique impressions of the region around Hopfgarten.
