The NationalparkRegion Hohe Tauern in Osttirol

Holiday with a view

If you've always set your sights high, here, right at the foot of Großglockner — Austria's highest mountain, with 3,798 m — the "king" of the Eastern Alps, is the perfect place for you!

The picturesque national park community Kals am Großglockner, at 1,325 m above sea level, lies amidst the unique mountain panorama of the three thousand meter peaks of the Schober, Glockner and Granatspitz groups and is one of the most pristine landscapes in Austria. The cable cars Kalser Bergbahnen take you to the Adlerlounge at lofty heights, with an all-round view of 60 three-thousanders and top-class Austrian cuisine.

Nestled by the Deferegger Mountains in the west and the Schober Group in the east you find the village of Matrei in Osttirol (975 m above sea level). A key advantage of Matrei is its central location - all valleys are in easy reach from here. Hikes in golden yellow larch forests, summit experiences with a view of over 60 three-thousand meter peaks, high-altitude hikes from hut to hut and a break in one of the many alpine farms open to the public and snack stations are simply part of it.

Virgen, a real recreational village with more than 2000 hours of sunshine a year, is located at 1,200 m above sea level and situated between the Großglockner and the Großvenediger on the south side of the main Alpine ridge amidst Hohe Tauern National Park. Virgen is particularly popular with guests who are looking for relaxation away from the hustle and bustle. Despite modernisation, the rural idyll of the mountain farming village can be felt everywhere — not only the traditional farmyards and the open country but also the loving, lavish floral decorations on the houses and the traditions are still preserved.

Prägraten am Großvenediger, the community at the head of the Virgental Valley, is located south of the main Alpine ridge at 1,312 m above sea level. The village is characterized by many distinctive farmhouses from the 17th and 18th century. People are strongly connected to the rural traditions and the original customs.  You will find nine beautiful side valleys and 50 three-thousanders around Prägraten, whereby the tallest of which, the Großvenediger with its 3,567 m above sea level, towers above all the others.

Between thick woods and steep slopes, on the banks of the roaring River Isel, nestles the community of St. Johann im Walde to the landscape of the Isel Valley. Especially the unique nature with the adjacent forests around the municipal area characterises the townscape of St. Johann.
